Heckfield Place
A Georgian family home restored from its classic origins on a 438-acre estate in Hampshire, England.
ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN: From its 18th century origins, Heckfield Place has been gently evolving for over 250 years. Sympathetically restored, the 21st century Heckfield House is the epitome of Georgian elegance, re-designed to be effortlessly warm and welcoming with interiors that honor its history. Heckfield and the surrounding countryside offers endless opportunities to explore and experience nature. East of the house, Heckfield’s upper and lower lakes are perfect for a quiet stroll through ‘pleasure grounds” whose development dates back to the 1820s. Walled Gardens laden with wisteria, lavender and English roses offer calm seclusion, and a perfect contrast to the wild heath, heather, woodlands, and trees found elsewhere on the grounds planted by the pioneering 18th century horticulturist, William Wildsmith. The Sun House, set within the Walled Garden, was re-built to replace Wildsmith’s original construction. Filled with plants and bathed in sunlight, it’s a venue that can be transformed for private gatherings. Home Farm, the estate’s biodynamic farm, provides fresh vegetables, fruits, honey and flowers for Heckfield’s restaurants and rooms.
On the interior, room accommodations offer different aspects that reflect the surrounding grounds. From bespoke English oak furniture to mats handwoven from rushes harvested on the River Ouse, their comfort and character is steeped in the natural materials and meticulous craftsmanship found throughout. Food and drink venues on the estate also echo the aesthetic with an ethos that “celebrates simplicity, the seasons, and a sense of place.”
