Listening Party: Polly Mackey
BACKGROUND: “Art School Girlfriend” is the moniker of Polly Mackey, a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer from Wrexham, North Wales. Finding herself drawn to London’s pirate radio networks, she began making experimental electronic music, eventually releasing her debut EP ‘Measures’ in 2017. Her second EP ‘Into The Blue Hour’ tracks her move to a tightly knit creative community in the seaside town of Margate, where she now lives, and reflects a new sense of space, depth and introspection.
WHY WE LIKE HER: Mackey’s gorgeous mix of droning electronics and glittering guitars form haunting soundscapes in their own right. Sometimes you need songs that indulge in melancholy, but, adroitly turn those feelings into something beautiful. Her inherent ability to create surreal, ethereal bodies of work laced with white magic is akin to the hypnotic euphoria of trance music, comforting, as she weaves insightful poetry over the top.
